Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize
Happy first Sunday in June! Can you believe six months of the year are already behind us? And we have six more to go.
Being at the half way mark in anything is an interesting position. Have you ever gone on a long walk and you look back from where you started, then you look ahead and try to see how much further you will go?
Maybe you say your end marker is that tree, a lightpole, that little fence right there. Or, my body will tell me when I’m tired. Or even, maybe 10 more minutes then I’ll turn around. But how do you motivate yourself? How to remind yourself to keep your eyes on the prize?
Staying committed to your goals can be challenging, but with the right strategies and mindset, you can increase your chances of success. Some of my earlier blog entries this year were focused on making time for wellness and setting clear goals. It is now time for that six month reminder. We still have time for change.
Here are some practical tips to help you stay committed to your goals:
Set Clear and Specific Goals: Define exactly what you want to achieve. What is it exactly that you want to do? Specific goals are easier to visualize and work towards.
Break Down Goals into Smaller Steps: Large goals can be overwhelming. Breaking them down into smaller tasks can make them more achievable, manageable, and not as overwhelming.
Create a Plan: Outline the steps needed to reach your goal. Write it down, use your notes app, put it somewhere. Having a written plan can keep you on track and organized. (and accountable!)
Stay Organized: Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, or other digital apps to keep track of your progress and deadlines.
Prioritize Your Goals: Focus on what's most important and make sure your actions align with your priorities.
Stay Flexible: Be open to adjusting your plan if necessary. Sometimes obstacles require a change in approach.
Monitor Your Progress: Regularly check your progress to see if you are on track. This can motivate you and help identify any areas that need adjustment.
Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and reward yourself for reaching smaller goals along the way. This can keep you motivated.
Stay Positive and Patient: Understand that progress might be slow and that setbacks are part of the journey. Maintain a positive mindset and be patient with yourself.
Stay Accountable: Share your goals with friends, family, your therapist or a mentor. They can provide support and hold you accountable.
Visualize Success: Regularly envision yourself achieving your goals. Visualization can boost your motivation and keep you focused.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise can improve your overall well-being and help you stay focused and energized.
Seek Support: Don't hesitate to seek help or advice from others who have experience or expertise in the area of your goals.
Avoid Distractions: Identify and minimize distractions that can derail your progress. Create an environment for working on your goals.
Stay Inspired: Read books, watch videos, or listen to podcasts that inspire and motivate you to keep pushing towards your goals.
By implementing these strategies, you can stay committed to your goals and increase your likelihood of success.
Keep your eyes on the prize. There is more work to do!

The intention for using social media for social workers and other mental health professionals is for marketing, education, advocacy, thought leadership, and providing content in a technologically changing field. We want to do this while making potential therapy-seekers aware of the risks and benefits of engagement on social media and Internet where mental health professionals are present. A therapeutic relationship is a professional relationship and in today's technological climate, a social media presence or following your therapist on social media is not to be confused with a relationship outside of therapy. Ethical, professional, and therapeutic boundaries must be followed and honored.
A counseling social media page or blog is not psychotherapy, a replacement for a therapeutic relationship, or substitute for mental health and medical care. A social media presence as a counseling professional is not seeking an endorsement, request, or rating from past or current clients.
