What Are Your Relationship Bad Habits?
New Year, New Me. And, I am trying to stand on everything I said I was going to do in my 2023 reflection wrap-up.
Can you relate? So, how is it going? 14 days into 2024 and trying to make many changes at once can be overwhelming.
Honestly, I am realizing breaking bad habits goes beyond dieting, time-management, and finances. It also applies to relationships.

But, it is time. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if it is time to drop that thing, that person, that fear, obstacle, getting in your way like a bad habit…do it We often stay in situations that are familiar and comfortable out of fear of change. We people-please and are afraid of setting boundaries with others at the expense of our own emotions. Think about any other change you have tried to make. It’s easier to have less discipline and continue to reward yourself but where is the growth? It’s seemingly easier to keep things the same even though the relationship issues are getting to you.
Have you ever had to tell yourself “no” Or, “enough, I am done?”
Have you ever been fed up with yourself?
Breaking bad habits in friendships and relationship is a positive step towards building a healthier and more fulfilling connection with yourself first and then other people.
What are some of your relationship bad habits?
Consider some of these common bad habits and see if there is anything to work on this year:
Communication Issues:
Bad Habit: Ignoring or avoiding important conversations
Solution: Foster open communication. Schedule regular check-ins, actively listen, and express your thoughts and feelings honestly.
Lack of Appreciation:
Bad Habit: Taking others for granted.
Solution: Show gratitude regularly. Acknowledge their efforts to be in your life, check in, express appreciation, and say "thank you" for the little things.
Neglecting Quality Time:
Bad Habit: Being too busy to spend quality time together
Solution: Prioritize quality time. Discuss scheduling in advance and try not to cancel!
Blame Game:
Bad Habit: Blaming others and not taking accountability
Solution: Practice self-reflection and communication. Use "I" statements, focus on the issue at hand, and work together to find solutions.
Unrealistic Expectations:
Bad Habit: Expecting your friend, partner, family member, *fill in the blank* to fulfill ALL your needs.
Solution: Understand that no one is perfect. Communicate your needs, but also be realistic and allow room for growth and imperfections.
Lack of Boundaries:
Bad Habit: Invading personal space or not respecting boundaries.
Solution: Establish and communicate clear boundaries. Respect each other's personal space, preferences, and individuality.
Avoiding Conflict Resolution:
Bad Habit: Sweeping issues under the rug.
Solution: Address conflicts promptly. Practice active listening, compromise, and find mutually agreeable solutions.
Neglecting Self-Care:
Bad Habit: Neglecting your own well-being.
Solution: Prioritize self-care. Take care of your physical and emotional needs to be better able to show up for people in your life.
Comparison to Others:
Bad Habit: Comparing your relationship(s) to others.
Solution: Focus on your unique relationships. Every connection is different, and comparing can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Remember, breaking relationship bad habits takes time and consistent effort. Open communication, willingness to change, and mutual respect are key elements in fostering healthier connections with others.
